Pole Transitions Anyone?
Heidi Coker And The Art Of Transitioning
One of my favorite aspects of pole has been learning new tricks. For years I was devoted to flipping, creating new shapes and acrobatics. Although we may have learned and ‘mastered’ a trick, the journey isn’t complete.
It is my belief that our pole practice is a microcosm for our life practice. In life, we learn, work towards and possibly accomplish ‘big moves’ such as graduating school, getting married, having kids, buying a house or car, taking a new job, moving to a new location, etc. In our pole life, we learn, work towards and possibly accomplish the traditional moves like; spins, climbing, inverting, and maybe a Superman or handspring. But it’s not only about the moves, it’s also the entry, exit and how we connect and put them together. Enter the art of transitioning.
Sometimes when we are moving from one skill to another, the transition can be scary, difficult, labored, and awkward. It takes practice to figure out how to move from point A to B and make it feel and look seamless. To understand the ins and outs, we must experience trial and error, countless hours of research, and investigation. It can be tempting to give up when we are faced with challenge, uncertainty, and frustration. Transitions can be tricky. But they also can transform a performance, and life experience. Here is where the idea of ‘the master has failed more times than the beginner has tried’ comes to mind.
With practice, we learn how to connect our new tricks and old, standard favorites. We learn to create combos and incorporate our own flare through transitions. We have our own personality, style, upbringing, and set of experiences that give our transitions depth and richness. Eventually the transition and combo becomes ‘our own’. How we move is unique to us and only we can know how best to feel into these changes of life and movement. There will be bruises, tears, excitement, fear, motivation and questioning;
“How in the heck do I do this?!”
“I’m not strong enough!”
“This is hard, when does it get easier!?”
As in pole, so in life.
In life, we use our newly developed ‘moves’ or skills to dive into a new path. We use the strength of our previous experiences, knowledge, and wisdom to forge new connections and experiment with possible transitions and life connections. This is where it gets interesting. We are creating our new experience, our new ‘combo’. And in our transition, we most definitely will experience nervousness, fear, anxiety, excitement and a multitude of other emotions! A little bit of guidance and support can do wonders. Here’s where having a coach can transform your experience. It’s like having a personal trainer for your life.
We add our own style, making interesting and unique transitions, to create a quality that leaves a lasting impression. The transition transforms and connects aspects of our life experiences.
My 15 years as a gymnast helped me to transition into a pole athlete. At the time I started learning this new “skill” I had no idea I would become a world champion pole artist.
Through my total physical training of 27 years, I learned to develop and master my body. Another skill attained and a new connection made not only for myself but also to help others. Enter physical pole coaching.
And along side of my physical practice, was the development of my mental practice. My athletic life was an uphill mental battle and my personal life was also experiencing a vast battle field. Enter in my research and training to work not only with my body, but also with my mind and spirit. My personal struggles and hardships gave birth to a new level of awareness. Enter mindfulness and Life coaching.
And what do I do with all these skills? These “big moves” in life that are staples to who I am and my experience. How do I use the art of transitioning to put them all together?
